By Aaron Humes: Owning a piece of land is every Belizean’s dream. However, one Belize City woman claims she lost all she had to an unscrupulous alleged scammer who sold her a dream.
According to police, a Guatemalan national we will only refer to as ‘Reyes’ of Holy Emmanuel Street met a man identified as ‘Munoz’ in August of 2023. Munoz had proposed to sell her a piece of land for $20,000.
According to Reyes, she paid Munoz $15,000 cash up front and agreed to pay the remainder on completion of the transfer of the property. He in turn gave her the land document and a copy of his Social Security card.
After trying and failing to contact Munoz to complete the transfer, Reyes told police she visited the Lands Department in Belmopan and her dream was cruelly unraveled.
The man she knew as Munoz in had a Castillo surname, and he does not own the land in question. Moreover, the documents he gave her were false.
Police are now seeking Castillo/Munoz as their investigations continue.
