Belize City woman arrested for scamming Celebrity Restaurant out of thousands in fake online orders

By Horace Palacio: Jemine Thurton, a 25-year-old resident of Belize City, was arrested on Sunday, May 12th, 2024 for allegedly defrauding Celebrity Restaurant out of over $3,200 through a series of fraudulent online food orders.

The administrator of Celebrity Restaurant reported the fraudulent activity to authorities after noticing discrepancies in online payment dates and times. An investigation revealed that Thurton had been placing orders using false payment information, resulting in numerous deliveries and pick-ups for which the restaurant never received legitimate payment.

Between March 24th and May 1st, Thurton allegedly ordered a variety of menu items, including pasta, burgers, chicken wings, and seafood dishes, as well as alcoholic beverages, totaling $3,128. Additionally, she had food and drinks delivered on separate occasions, amounting to an additional $100.

Thurton was arrested and charged with Obtaining Property by Deception and Obtaining Services by Deception. Police have recorded statements from the administrator of Celebrity Restaurant and obtained receipts and bank statements as evidence.

This case highlights the growing concern of online fraud and the importance of businesses being vigilant in verifying payment information. Celebrity Restaurant’s prompt reporting and cooperation with police led to the quick apprehension of the suspect.
