By Aaron Humes: The Belize City Council, led by Mayor Bernard Wagner, has officially signed the Letter of Commitment to the Making Cities Resilient 2030 program. This commitment showcases the city’s dedication to building long-term resilience and effectively reducing disaster risks.
The initiative, spearheaded by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), aims to empower cities worldwide to adopt more inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable practices. By signing this commitment, Belize City is set to be a leader in promoting disaster risk awareness and implementing well-informed strategies for risk reduction.
In the signed letter, the council outlines several key goals, including analyzing and applying the Ten Essentials for Making Cities Resilient, and monitoring progress through clearly defined indicators. The Belize City Council is also committed to sharing its experiences and strategies with other member cities within the global network, fostering a collaborative approach to urban resilience.
To spearhead these efforts, Mayor Wagner has appointed Ms. Melony Dawson, Liaison Officer for the City Emergency Management Organization (CEMO), as the city’s primary contact for coordinating initiatives under the Making Cities Resilient 2030 framework. CEMO will play a vital role in implementing resilience strategies and institutionalizing risk reduction practices across various sectors.
Mayor Wagner expressed gratitude to the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) for their continuous support and collaboration, emphasizing the importance of their partnership in advancing the city’s resilience initiatives.
The Belize City Council’s commitment marks a pivotal moment in the city’s journey towards resilience, as it aims to protect its citizens and infrastructure against the increasing threat of disasters.
As Belize City moves forward with its plans, it is poised to become a model for other cities in the region, demonstrating that proactive planning and a focus on resilience can lead to safer, more sustainable urban environments.
