Belize City port set for massive transformation under $800 million project

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize City could see one of its biggest infrastructure transformations in decades as Government prepares for a proposed redevelopment of the Port of Belize valued at more than $800 million.

Prime Minister John Briceño announced during his State of the Nation Address that the project is expected to start next year.

The plans call for deeper and wider marine access into Belize City, completely new cargo facilities and a modern gateway for cruise tourism.

Briceño described the development as the largest infrastructure project in Belize’s history.

The announcement formed part of a wider section of the address focused on major investments Government expects to advance in the near term.

Briceño also pointed to the Belize Compact with the United States Millennium Challenge Corporation, which focuses on education and energy.

The compact was signed in 2024 with US$125 million in grant funding from the United States, along with a Government of Belize financial contribution. MCC says the programme is designed to improve education and workforce readiness while addressing the high cost of electricity.

For Belize City, however, the proposed $800 million port redevelopment stands out as one of the largest individual projects announced.

Construction is expected to begin in 2027, according to the Prime Minister.
