By Zoila Palma: Belize City has been named one of 26 finalists for the 2025 Bloomberg Philanthropies Local Leaders Awards, which honor bold and people-centered climate initiatives from around the world.
The announcement comes ahead of the COP30 Local Leaders Forum, scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro on November 4. The Awards, organized in partnership with C40 Cities, recognize outstanding local leadership in addressing climate change and advancing sustainability.
Mayor Bernard Wagner was honored as a finalist in the Clean, Reliable Transportation category for Belize City’s innovative eMobility Pilot Project.
The initiative introduces electric buses, charging stations, and smart transit technology aimed at reducing emissions, improving air quality, and promoting sustainable urban transport. “Small city, big impact,” Mayor Wagner said. “Being named a Bloomberg Global Local Leader finalist serves as validation of our vision: a transportation system that is transformative, clean, reliable, and accessible to all. We intend to harness this momentum to transform Belize City into a hub of sustainable mobility that drives economic growth, public health, and a thriving community.”
The eMobility Pilot Project plans to expand its eBus and eTaxi fleets, extend the charging network, and integrate solar power to build a scalable, self-sustaining model for Belize and other small island developing states.
The final winners of the 2025 Bloomberg Philanthropies Local Leaders Awards will be announced at COP30, where the event will celebrate groundbreaking climate solutions and inspire further global action toward a more sustainable future.
