By Breaking Belize News Staff: Denroy Moss, a 35-year-old father and resident of Daly Street, Belize City, has been sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to charges of keeping a prohibited firearm — a homemade gun — and unlicensed ammunition.
Moss was initially arraigned on Monday, April 14, 2025, before the Magistrate in Court #8. During his first appearance, he accepted responsibility for the illegal weapon and five live rounds of .38 ammunition after being told a prison sentence was likely. Moss later tried to reverse his plea on April 17, citing fear after spending three nights on remand at the Kolbe Foundation. However, the Magistrate rejected the attempt to change his plea, and the matter was adjourned to address sentencing.
In court on Monday, April 29, Moss reaffirmed his guilty plea and asked the court for leniency, explaining he had been trying to dispose of the weapon but had not yet done so. He also shared that he is a single father raising his 2-year-old son after the child’s mother left them.
Moss, who has a prior firearm conviction, avoided the five-year minimum mandatory sentence, as the Magistrate used discretion to impose a lesser penalty after weighing the mitigating and aggravating factors in the case. Moss also received a one-third reduction in his sentence for his early guilty plea, resulting in a final sentence of two years imprisonment.
According to police reports, Moss was arrested after officers executed a search warrant at his residence around 6:40 a.m. on Sunday, April 12. Upon their arrival, Moss reportedly told PC Meighan, “Boss, I nuh wah waste yuh time, I have a small ting,” and directed officers to a school bag containing a homemade firearm. He later admitted to having additional ammunition in another bag.
Despite his previous conviction, Moss was shown unusual leniency under the circumstances.
