By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 22-year-old Belize City laborer is back behind bars after being charged with aggravated burglary in connection to a May home invasion. Dwayne Douglas Tillett, of Rivero Street, appeared unrepresented before the Senior Magistrate in Court #6 on Friday, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The allegations stem from an incident on May 20, 2024, when Tillett and another man, 23-year-old Kevaughn Usher, allegedly entered the home of a 19-year-old while armed with a firearm. During the invasion, the men reportedly stole an orange-and-gray Enco weed cutter valued at $350 and $80 in cash.
According to the police report, the victim was sitting in his sister’s living room when the men entered through an open front door. Usher allegedly punched the man in the face and took the cash from his pocket while “Genius,” identified as Tillett, reportedly pointed a firearm at Brown and threatened to kill him. Fearing for his life, the man complied, and Usher allegedly took the weed cutter before both men fled.
Although Tillett claimed in court that the complainant had requested no legal action and described the matter as a misunderstanding between family members, the Senior Magistrate explained that no such directive had been received. Due to the serious nature of the charge, bail was denied, and Tillett was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until November 27, 2024.
Usher, a fisherman also from Rivero Street, was the first to be charged in June 2024 and initially denied bail. However, he was granted bail by the High Court in September and remains out of custody. Both men are expected to appear together in court later this month.
Police said their investigation was supported by witness statements and video footage, which provided key evidence leading to the arrests.
