By Breaking Belize News Staff: After spending nearly two months on remand, 25-year-old Shawn Humes was released on Wednesday after pleading guilty to a charge of threat of death against his aunt.
Humes, a resident of Wagners Lane in Belize City, had initially pleaded not guilty when first arraigned on February 11, but changed his plea to guilty on Wednesday morning in Court #5. He told the magistrate, “Sorry, I was in an angry state. My mother was sick. I was in a depressed moment.”
The aunt, a domestic worker, had reported to police that on February 10, while returning home with officers to investigate a damage to property incident, Humes approached her aggressively and yelled: “You deh play with me, I wah kill you when I get my bail.”
Unable to meet his original $500 bail, Humes remained in custody at Belize Central Prison for one month, three weeks, and five days. On Wednesday, he was fined $150 plus $5 court costs, with a deadline to pay by May 30, 2025, or face one week imprisonment.
However, the magistrate ruled that Humes’ time served would count toward the default sentence, allowing his immediate release.
Police have indicated that additional charges for damage to property may still be brought against Humes in connection to the same incident.
