By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 27-year-old Belize City man, Christopher Brian Usher, has lost half of the $10,738.40 seized from his home after he pleaded guilty to drug possession in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. The Belize Tax Service confiscated a portion of the money after Usher failed to provide a valid explanation for the large sum found under his bed during a police raid.

Usher and his two sisters, 33-year-old Kimisha Mishanti Usher and 30-year-old Kenisha Monica Usher, were initially charged with possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply after police discovered 67.9 grams of cannabis at their Amara Avenue residence on April 2, 2025.

In court, Usher pleaded guilty to simple possession, claiming the marijuana was for personal use, while his sisters pleaded not guilty. Since the amount was only 7.9 grams over the drug trafficking threshold, the prosecutor accepted Usher’s plea, and charges against his sisters were dropped. Usher was fined $300 plus $5 in court costs, payable by March 30, 2025, or face two weeks in prison.

However, after his court appearance, Usher was taken back into police custody as authorities continued to investigate the source of the $10,738.40 found in a red school bag under his bed. The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) and the Belize Income Tax Department were called in to assess whether the money was obtained legally.

During the raid, police also found a stash of cannabis hidden inside a wooden doghouse on the property. While Usher admitted ownership of the marijuana, he could not account for the large sum of cash, prompting law enforcement to seize it under the Money Laundering Act.

Under the law, if an individual cannot justify possession of a significant amount of cash, authorities may confiscate up to 15% or more of the total sum. In Usher’s case, half of the money was taken by Belize Tax Service following his conviction.
