By Breaking Belize News Staff: 47-year-old Fidel Ramirez, a mechanic of Belize City, is behind bars after pleading guilty to possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply—a charge stemming from a bust earlier this year in which police found him with 2,091.1 grams (over two pounds) of cannabis.
Ramirez, who had initially pleaded not guilty, changed his plea to guilty on Wednesday before a magistrate in Court #3. He was handed a two-year suspended sentence and fined the mandatory minimum of $10,000 plus $5 court costs. Half of that fine—$5,000—was ordered to be paid forthwith, but Ramirez was unable to pay and was taken into custody.
He has until December 30, 2025, to pay the remaining $5,000 or face an additional two years in prison. If Ramirez commits any offense within the next two years, his suspended sentence will be activated, and he will serve two years in jail.
The charge arose from a January 17, 2025 drug bust, when Ramirez, then 46, was found with over two pounds of marijuana. At that time, he had initially pleaded guilty but later withdrew the plea, claiming he shared the home with his son and was unaware of the drugs’ presence. He was released on $1,500 bail pending trial, which was scheduled for today.
Instead of facing trial, Ramirez opted to plead guilty, resulting in the suspended sentence and fine imposed by the court.
