By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man charged with possession of 28 grams of marijuana is out on bail after a Magistrate rejected his initial guilty plea because of conflicting statements he made in court.

Fermin Sho appeared before newly appointed Magistrate Neeshad Mohammed in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, where he was read a single charge of possession of controlled drugs.

Police alleged that on Saturday, May 2, 2026, Sho was found with 28 grams of marijuana while on the George Price Highway.

During the arraignment, Sho, who was unrepresented, initially pleaded guilty to the charge. However, after the facts of the case were read aloud, he made statements that cast doubt on whether he was admitting guilt.

“I just want to say sorry. I nuh really remember nothing. I just remember someone ketch me and I wake up at the cell block and I was charged. I don’t know how it end up in my pocket,” Sho told the court.

Magistrate Mohammed informed Sho that the court could not accept a guilty plea under those circumstances since he was now claiming he could not recall having the drugs on him. An equivocal plea of not guilty was therefore entered on his behalf.

With no objection to bail, Sho was granted bail in the sum of $300 plus one surety of the same amount, which he was able to meet.

His next court date has been set for June 29, 2026.

According to police reports, officers attached to the GI3 Unit were conducting mobile patrol along the George Price Highway shortly after midnight on May 2 when they observed two men running across the highway before suddenly increasing their pace.

Police said officers intercepted the men and informed them that a search would be conducted. During the search of Sho, who was reportedly wearing a black shirt, an officer allegedly felt a bulky object in his pants waist. The search reportedly led to the discovery of a plastic bag containing green leafy substances suspected to be cannabis.

Sho was escorted to the police station, where the substance was weighed in his presence and amounted to 28 grams.
