Belize City man fined for crack possession

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man, 66-year-old Lanslot Earl Frederick Vernon is lucky to have been let off with a fine instead of jail time for a charge of possession of controlled drugs.

Vernon appeared in court unrepresented on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of a controlled drug, to wit, 1.9 grams of crack cocaine. For his plea, the magistrate imposed a non-custodial sentence of a fine of $1,800 plus $5 cost of court.

He was given until July 31 to pay, in default, one year in jail. Vernon was busted by police on March 30 on Castle Street with the drugs. According to police, Vernon was seen acting suspiciously and turned the opposite direction when he saw police. He was approached and started running before he was apprehended and found with the crack cocaine.
