By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man was fined and ordered to compensate his former girlfriend after admitting that he assaulted her and threw her cellphone into a drain during a domestic dispute.
Francis Staine, 30, appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he pleaded guilty to common assault and damage to property.
Police alleged that on Monday, July 27, 2026, Staine assaulted the woman and damaged her cellphone by throwing it into a drain. The dispute reportedly arose after Staine accused her of being unfaithful.
While the complainant described Staine as her ex-boyfriend, he told the court that they had still been in a relationship up until the incident. He also said their child was with the woman at the time.
In mitigation, Staine became emotional and described himself as a hardworking person.
“I can give her back the phone, and I promise I will leave her alone,” he told the court.
The court advised Staine to accept that the relationship had ended and “let it go.” Staine acknowledged that he needed to move on and leave the woman alone.
He was fined a total of $360 for the two offences and ordered to pay the complainant $200 in compensation for the damaged cellphone by September 30, 2026. Failure to pay the compensation could result in distress proceedings against him.
