By Aaron Humes: Once again, a local resident became the latest victim of an online scam while trying to buy a queen-sized bed and mattress through Facebook Marketplace. The incident, reported to the Precinct 2 Crimes Investigation Branch, highlights the increasing prevalence of online fraud targeting unsuspecting buyers.

On January 22, the complainant encountered a listing on Facebook Marketplace for a queen-sized bed and mattress priced at $350. Intrigued by the deal, he promptly contacted the seller, operating under the account name “Chubs Damacio,” expressing his intention to purchase the item. After negotiating the price, the two parties agreed on a transfer of $300 to a Belize Bank account.

After completing the transaction, the complainant sent a receipt of the transfer to the seller via Facebook Messenger, expecting the delivery of his new purchase shortly thereafter. However, his hopes were dashed when, the following day, he received a message from “Chubs Damacio” confirming that the bed and mattress had been shipped, yet no delivery was made.

The complainant contacted Belize Package and Mail Service (BPMS) on January 24, only to find out no shipment had occurred. Since then, he has attempted to reach the seller repeatedly, but all his messages have gone unanswered. As of his report to the police, he has neither received the merchandise nor a refund for his payment.

Authorities have recorded a statement and collected transaction receipts as part of the investigation. A Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) request has been prepared to track the fraudulent transaction.

This incident serves as a stark reminder for consumers to exercise caution when engaging in online purchases. Local law enforcement advises prospective buyers to verify sellers thoroughly and to remain skeptical of deals that seem too good to be true.
