Belize City man charged with assaulting neighbour, granted $600 bail

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 48-year-old Belize City man has been charged with common assault following an alleged confrontation with his neighbour last month.

Samuel James Chan, a self-employed resident of Campus Avenue in the West Landivar area, appeared before a Magistrate in Belize City on Friday, October 30, where he was accused of assaulting a woman.

According to the charge, the alleged incident occurred on September 17, 2026, at a property on Yabra Road in Belize City.

Chan, who was represented by attorney Ian Gray, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

With no objection from the prosecution, the Magistrate granted Chan bail of $600 plus one surety of the same amount, which he was able to meet.

However, strict conditions were imposed on his release. Chan was ordered not to contact or interfere with his neighbor and must remain at least 100 yards away from her.

He was also warned that failure to attend his scheduled court appearances could result in his bail being revoked.

Chan is scheduled to return to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on December 9, 2026, when disclosure of the prosecution’s evidence is expected to be provided.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged assault were not disclosed during the arraignment.
