Belize City Magistrate’s Court bids farewell to veteran clerk Diana Hendy after 35 years of service

By Breaking Belize News Staff: After 35 years of dedicated service to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, long-serving Clerk of Court Diana Victoria Hendy is closing one chapter of her life and stepping confidently into retirement.

Hendy, who spent her entire public service career within the Magistracy, reflected on her decades of service as a pleasant and rewarding journey, marked by growth, milestones, and the evolution of the court system.

Speaking on her final day at the courthouse, Hendy said she is proud to retire after witnessing significant changes in the Magistracy Department, particularly its transformation from a paper-based system to a modern electronic case management system.

Among the highlights of her career, Hendy fondly recalled the opportunity to work under nine Chief Magistrates over the years: former Chief Magistrate and later High Court judge Troadio “John” Gonzalez, Bridget Nurse, Adolph Lucas Sr., Herbert Lord, Margaret Gabb McKenzie, Anne Marie Smith, Sharon Fraser, Jayani Wegodapola, and newly appointed Chief Magistrate Deborah Rogers.

Hendy began her career at the historic Paslow Building at the corner of Queen Street and North Front Street, where the Magistrate’s Court was once housed. She first joined the department as a clerk typist and steadily rose through the ranks, later serving in records management before taking part in the development of the Court Case Management System (CCMS)—a milestone she described as the point where she truly discovered her passion for the work.

She later became Assistant Clerk of Court before succeeding former Clerk of Court Orlene Pitzold in the top clerical post. Hendy shared that Pitzold had once worked at the high school she attended, making it especially meaningful that she would one day become her successor.

Though she spent much of her later years working behind the scenes, colleagues say Hendy remained instrumental in ensuring the smooth and efficient daily operations of the court, always carrying out her duties with professionalism and a warm smile.

A mother of three, wife, and graduate of Gwen Lizarraga High School, Hendy also furthered her studies at Belize Technical College.

As she walked the halls of the Belize City Magistrate’s Court for the final time on Thursday, Hendy said retirement is simply another milestone—one she welcomes with the same passion and positivity that defined her 35 years of service.

Hendy’s successor will be Virginia Uk, formerly the Clerk of Court in Corozal.
