Belize City hosts major Christian concert; City Council defends use of public funds

By Aaron Humes: The Holy Week Revival Concert, a two-day Gospel event set to bring together residents for a spiritual celebration, continues this evening at Belize City’s Digi Park. With a budget of $236,000, this year’s concert has seen an increase of $20,000 from the previous iteration in 2023, supported by significant contributions from local businesses.

Mayor Bernard Wagner reported that approximately $100,000 has been raised through partnerships with the corporate sector, leaving a city-funded budget shortfall of $136,000. In light of this financial commitment, the mayor defended the use of public funds for the concert, emphasizing its importance in fostering community and enhancing the social well-being of residents.

“Running a city is not only about physical infrastructure, you need to invest in people and we believe that this is a good investment, investing in the social wellbeing of our residents in the city and so we feel that it is justifiable,” Wagner stated.

The concert features notable performers like the reggae-inspired band Christafari and acclaimed Nigerian singer Sinach, and is expected to draw crowds much larger than previous secular events, as noted by Church Senator Louis Wade Jr. “Our Constitution begins by saying that this nation shall be established upon principles that acknowledge the supremacy of God and so if we don’t strengthen the foundation like that sentence is the foundation and so what The Belize City Council is doing through its Mayor and its councilors and the support that the government has given is to strengthen the foundation. Now you can build anything once your foundation is strong. What we have here for [Tuesday and Wednesday] night is the world’s best. Just like the last time, I believe the turnout is going to be even bigger. It’s not promoting any specific church or denomination; this is promoting our culture which is a Christian culture.”

Sinach said she was happy to be back: “I remember the first time we came it was amazing, the turnout was amazing and the impact was beautiful. We had a lot of testimonies and feedback. It was beautiful to just see the Lord touch many people, it was beautiful…”

Transportation to and entrance into the event is free.
