By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City fisherman is in debt to the court after pleading guilty to assaulting his common-law wife.
41-year-old David Santos Sr., a resident of Ordonez Street, was fined $205 after admitting to stomping his wife in the face during a domestic dispute on Saturday, April 19, 2025.
Appearing unrepresented before newly appointed Magistrate Ludlow Black in Court #1, Santos Sr. pleaded guilty to a single charge of common assault. When questioned by the Magistrate, Santos openly admitted to the violent act, claiming it was the first time such an incident had occurred.
However, court records revealed previous domestic incidents involving Santos and his wife. Although Santos argued that prior issues were only verbal arguments mainly concerning their teenage children, Magistrate Black emphasized that violence in domestic relationships must stop.
In determining the sentence, Magistrate Black noted the seriousness of the assault, the lack of mitigating factors, and the aggravating circumstances of physical violence. While Santos’ early guilty plea and acceptance of responsibility spared him from imprisonment, Magistrate Black sternly warned him that “it is not right to hit a woman.”
Santos Sr. was fined $200 plus a $5 court cost, which he paid forthwith to avoid one week in jail. The court hopes the incident will not be repeated.
