By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City couple, including a Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU) worker and a security guard, has been remanded to prison after police uncovered a significant quantity of marijuana, along with a firearm and ammunition, at their home.
Tamika Jenna Smith, 29, a Ranger Security guard, and her boyfriend, Michael Shawn Whylie, 31, an LIU worker, both of Handyside Street, were arraigned on Wednesday before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison in Court #6.
They were jointly charged with three offenses: possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply—amounting to 17 pounds of marijuana—kept firearm without a gun license, and kept ammunition without a license. The weapon is described as a .22 revolver with no visible serial number, along with live rounds of ammunition.
Both defendants pleaded not guilty and were denied bail due to the nature of the offenses. They have been remanded to the Belize Central Prison until May 12, 2026.
According to police, the bust occurred on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at the couple’s residence following intelligence received by Special Branch. A joint operation involving the Anti-Narcotics Unit, Special Branch, Precinct 3, and the Quick Response Team led to the execution of a search warrant at the address.
During the search, a K9 unit signaled the presence of drugs inside the apartment. Officers subsequently discovered multiple quantities of suspected cannabis in various locations, including a green plastic bag found in a hall area.
Further search led officers to a concealed section beneath the floor, accessed through a plywood covering. Inside a hidden compartment and adjoining lower flat, police found additional bags containing suspected cannabis, along with a black .22 revolver concealed inside a PVC pipe. The firearm reportedly contained live rounds of ammunition.
The couple was detained and later formally charged following the discovery.
Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
