By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize City Council recently hosted Geographic Information System (GIS) Officer Shamir Jacobs from the Belmopan City Council as part of a knowledge-sharing initiative aimed at enhancing urban planning and city management. This collaboration highlights the importance of inter-city partnerships in fostering innovation and efficiency.
During his three-day visit, Jacobs worked closely with Belize City Council’s GIS Specialist, Vasni Pech. The exchange allowed Jacobs to gain valuable insights into the current and planned utilization of GIS technology by the Belize City Council. Together, they discussed best practices and observed how GIS is being used to streamline operations and improve public service efficiency.
Pech demonstrated the practical applications of GIS technology in enhancing city management, service delivery, and urban planning. This hands-on experience emphasized the benefits of GIS in addressing urban challenges and building smarter, more sustainable communities.
This collaboration is a significant step toward advancing municipal innovation and efficiency. By sharing expertise and strengthening inter-city partnerships, the Belize City Council and the Belmopan City Council are laying the groundwork for a brighter urban future.
The Belize City Council thanked Belmopan Mayor Pablo Cawich and the Belmopan City Council for initiating the partnership, adding that they look forward to continued collaboration in shaping the future of urban development and creating a more connected and efficient network of municipalities.
