By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize City Council is advising motorists to exercise caution and expect delays on Thursday morning as the 35th Annual KREM New Year’s Day Cycling Classic makes its way into the city.
With more than 100 cyclists competing across the Elite, Masters, Junior, and Women’s categories, the Council said traffic flow will be affected along the Philip Goldson Highway and major entry points leading into Belize City. The Elite and Masters riders will be coming from the Belize–Mexico Border, while the Men’s Junior and Women’s fields will approach from Orange Walk.
“Enforcement Officers will be providing an escort for this race to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow,” the Belize City Council.
The Council said traffic personnel and police officers will be stationed at key intersections to guide motorists and ensure the safety of both riders and spectators. Drivers are urged to slow down, follow all instructions from authorities, and avoid overtaking cyclists along the race route.
The race is expected to finish on Central American Boulevard, where heavier congestion is anticipated as fans gather to welcome the riders.
The Belize City Council thanked the public for their cooperation and encouraged residents to plan their morning travel accordingly.
The 35th KREM Classic, organized by KREM Radio in collaboration with the Cycling Federation of Belize, is the traditional opener of the national cycling calendar and draws thousands of spectators each year.
Motorists are reminded: patience saves lives—please share the road on New Year’s Day.
