Belize City Council clarifies details on Belcan Bridge project

By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Belize City Council has issued a detailed statement to address what it describes as “recent public misstatements” concerning the design and implementation of the new Belcan Bridge project.

According to the Council, misinformation aired on Channel 7 News by Roque Matus prompted the need to clarify the facts surrounding the bridge’s design process, funding, and construction oversight.

The Council explained that the initial design for the new Belcan Bridge was commissioned by the Government of Belize in 2019 and executed by M&M Engineering Consultants Ltd.

Once completed, the design documents became the property of the Government and were later passed through the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) and the Ministry of Finance before reaching the Council. However, upon review, the international engineering firm Turba Limited—contracted to supervise the construction—determined that the documents were incomplete and “not suitable for construction or supervision.” The Council noted that key components such as “calculation notes, geotechnical and environmental reports, and critical structural details” were missing.

In response, the Belize City Council, with support from Turba and its engineering partners, collaborated with Belizean structural engineer Carlton Young to develop what it calls “Supplementary Design Documents.”

These new designs included structural reinforcements, improved foundation support, and refined load-bearing features to ensure safety and durability. “Our primary goal has always been to construct a safe and resilient bridge for Belizeans,” the Council stated. “We took every necessary step to ensure that the final design meets international engineering standards.”

Highlighting its commitment to transparency, the Council emphasized that the improved design set eliminates potential conflicts of interest and provides “equal opportunity to all qualified contractors to submit competitive bids.” A spokesperson further noted, “This process demonstrates our dedication to accountability and professional integrity.” The Council added that the Belcan Bridge project remains a top priority for the city’s infrastructure development and reaffirmed its promise to “deliver a high-quality and safe new bridge for the people of Belize City.”
