By Aaron Humes: In response to a significant spike in violent crime, traced back to the January killing of Brandon Baptist and escalating with the shooting of Jimmy Rojas, a State of Emergency (SOE) to restore safety and order has been implemented.

Before it was formally announced, Dr. Richard Rosado, the Commissioner of Police, expressed grave concerns regarding the escalating security threat, labeling the situation as critical. “In light of the recent events, I believe there’s a need for drastic measures,” Dr. Rosado stated. “One month will not suffice; we must consider a minimum of six months to effectively address the situation and ensure the safety of our citizens.” He reassured the public that law enforcement is utilizing all available resources to combat violence and restore peace in the streets.

The Belize Police Department is specifically targeting the role of motorcycles in criminal activities, which have become a preferred mode of transportation for gang-related violence. Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero highlighted a troubling trend: “We have seen an increase in the use of motorcycles to commit these murders. Our focus is on identifying and monitoring suspicious individuals operating these vehicles.”

The plan is not to conduct random searches but rather to follow and scrutinize known key players in the crime scene. “Once we identify a suspect on a motorcycle, we will target them,” Romero explained, reiterating the department’s commitment to disrupt the cycle of violence in Belize City.

Police hope these initiatives will reduce gang activity and foster a greater sense of security among residents. However, the path to peace appears challenging, and the metrics of success will be closely observed by both the police and the community. As the situation continues to evolve, the Belize Police Department remains steadfast in its resolve to combat gang violence and uphold justice.
