By Aaron Humes: A three-member CARICOM Election Observation Mission (CEOM) has arrived in Barbados to observe the General Election scheduled for February 11. The team includes Chief Election Officer of Belize Josephine Tamai as Deputy Chief of Mission, and was invited by the Government of Barbados to assess the electoral process.

Led by Chief of Mission Ian S. Hughes from Antigua and Barbuda, the CEOM will meet with key stakeholders, including Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, Opposition Leader Ralph Thorne, and the Electoral and Boundaries Commission. They will observe the electoral process, including voting, counting, and declaration of results.

The Mission will issue a Preliminary Statement on February 11, outlining their initial assessment, followed by a detailed Final Report submitted to CARICOM Secretary-General Dr Carla Barnett. The observers’ presence aims to support Barbados’ democratic process and provide insight into the country’s electoral preparedness.

Prime Minister Mottley’s Barbados Labour Party is defending a 29-1 seat edge in the House of Assembly.
