By Zoila Palma: The Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) has issued a statement calling for a transparent and inclusive consultation process regarding a potential telecommunications transaction involving Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) and Speednet.
The BCCI acknowledged the Government of Belize’s decision to allow continued consultation following a Cabinet presentation on the proposed transaction.
The Chamber described the move as a prudent step that aligns with principles of transparency, due process, and responsible governance, given the potential implications for national competition, consumer welfare, and the private sector.
The BCCI emphasized that any such transaction must undergo a thorough and objective assessment, including its impact on market competition, regulatory frameworks, pricing, service quality, consumer choice, and the broader economic environment.
The Chamber stressed that meaningful stakeholder engagement is essential to ensure informed decision-making.
As part of its efforts, the BCCI has formally invited Belize Telemedia Limited, a member of the Chamber, to present directly to its Executive Council and wider membership.
The engagement aims to facilitate open dialogue, allow stakeholders to raise questions, and share perspectives, particularly in a rapidly evolving telecommunications market that now includes emerging satellite-based services.
The Chamber said it remains committed to constructive engagement with the government, regulators, and industry stakeholders to ensure any outcome serves Belize’s long-term economic interests.
