By Horace Palacio: On this day, August 1st, Belize joins its Caribbean neighbors in commemorating Emancipation Day, marking the abolition of slavery in 1838.
This commemoration became a reality on January 11th, 2021, when the Government of Belize announced that Belize would join its sister nations of the English-speaking Caribbean in celebrating Emancipation Day. This decision was the result of the tireless efforts of organizations like the UBAD Educational Foundation (UEF), along with other dedicated groups and individuals.
Emancipation Day serves as a reminder of the struggles and triumphs of our ancestors. It is a day to reflect on the painful history of slavery, celebrate the resilience of those who fought for freedom, and recognize the ongoing journey toward equality and justice.
As we celebrate this day, let us remember the words of Marcus Garvey, “We are going to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery because whilst others might free the body, none but ourselves can free the mind.”
Breaking Belize News encourages all Belizeans to learn about the history of slavery in Belize and to participate in the various activities and events organized to mark this occasion.
Happy Emancipation Day, Belize!
