By Horace Palacio: Caribbean Community (CARICOM) foreign ministers, including those from Belize, have reiterated their demand for the United States to remove Cuba from its list of states deemed sponsors of terrorism.

The call came despite the recent U.S. decision to remove Cuba from a separate list of countries accused of “not cooperating fully” in the fight against terrorism. CARICOM foreign ministers welcomed this move but emphasized that Cuba remains on the more severe State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT) list, which they deem unjust and harmful to the Cuban people.

Belize, echoing earlier sentiments from Dominica, expressed “deep concern” over the continued listing and called on Washington to “immediately remove Cuba from that list.” Both countries highlighted the lack of evidence supporting the designation and the detrimental impact it has had on the Cuban population.

The United States cited improved law enforcement cooperation as the reason for removing Cuba from the non-cooperation list. However, the Trump-era designation of Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism remains, a move that Cuba blames for exacerbating its economic crisis.

CARICOM foreign ministers, in a statement issued late Friday night, reaffirmed their rejection of the U.S. economic embargo against Cuba, calling both the terrorism designation and the 62-year-old embargo unjust and harmful to the Cuban people.

The statement made no mention of the ongoing crisis in Haiti, suggesting that the issue was not addressed during the two-day meeting.
