Belize Canoe Association meeting reveals strong positions on Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge dispute, future of canoeing in Belize

59

The 2026 Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge got underway on Friday, March 6, 2026, under the Hawkesworth Bridge in San Ignacio. The four-stage 170-mile race finished on Monday, March 9, 2026 in Belize City.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Canoe Association (BCA) has released the official minutes of a pivotal meeting held on Saturday, 28 February 2026, at the Riverside Tavern in Belize City, where their membership debated the future of the sport and responded to the escalating controversy surrounding the 2026 Belikin La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge.

The minutes, published on Wednesday, March 4, outline a series of decisions taken by the BCA’s executive and membership. The meeting took place just days before the most contentious edition of the race in its 29‑year history, following the organizers’ decision to move the traditional finish from the Belcan Bridge to the Grand Resort near the Haulover Bridge — a move that has triggered national debate, paddler mobilization, and public backlash.

Executive Matters and New Appointments

The BCA confirmed that Leon Lord is their news treasurer and Michael Myvett their news records keeper.

Sanctioning of the Ruta Maya Race

One of the most significant agenda items was whether the BCA should require the organizers of the La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge to have the race sanctioned by the Association.

“The membership agreed, that we should engage the organizers of La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge to have their race be sanctioned by the Belize Canoe Association. And if any other entity should control the future of the race they will also be asked to be sanctioned by the Belize Canoe Association,” the BCA’s report on the meeting said.

This decision reflects the BCA’s broader concern that, in their view, the organizers made major changes to the ending of the race without consulting the Association, the paddlers, the sponsors, or the fans — a central grievance driving the current dispute.

Protest Actions Against the Organizers

The meeting minutes reveal that the BCA and their membership discussed a range of protest options in response to what they described as “the biggest most selfish and ill-advised decision, since the start of the race in 1998, without any meaningful dialog [sic] with the Belize Canoe Association, paddlers, team sponsors and the fans that we are aware of.”

The BCA emphasized that it “can’t allow this to just blow over.”

Boycott of the Race Rejected

The most drastic suggestion — a full boycott of the 2026 race — was ultimately dismissed:

“A motion was put forward… to not boycott the race this year, due to the investments that had already been made by paddlers and sponsors. This motion was adopted by our membership.”

Boycott of Love FM Interviews Approved

A more targeted protest was approved:

“Our membership agreed, that this would be the best way to send a message… Without the support of our membership, who are mostly paddlers and team sponsors, no race can ever be successful.”

Under this decision, paddlers would refuse interviews with Love FM during all four days of the race, while encouraging other media houses to increase their coverage.

Paddling to Belcan After the Official Finish

The BCA also addressed the suggestion that paddlers complete the official race route — finishing at the Grand Resort — and then continue together to the traditional finish at Belcan Bridge.

The minutes confirm:

“Our membership agreed, that they would start and finish each leg of the race as it has been announced… However, after finishing the last leg of the race, the majority of our membership has decided to wait for the rest of the teams to arrive at the finish line, then all together continue to paddle to the Belcan Bridge in Belize City.”

The Association called on “all the relevant authorities to honor our memberships protest action and help to make sure that the paddlers rights and safety will be a priority,” during this symbolic action. The BCA noted that if water conditions are unsafe, the plan may be reconsidered.

Position on Bowen & Bowen

The BCA also discussed whether to seek support from Bowen & Bowen, and whether a boycott of Belikin should be considered if the company sided with the organizers.

The minutes record:

“Our membership feels that the statement made by Bowen and Bowen, is sufficient for us not to have any issues with them. We do want to thank Bowen & Bowen for being the longest standing sponsor of the Belize Canoe Association.”

International Representation and CAC Games Quotas

The BCA announced that Belize has been granted six quotas for the Central American & Caribbean Games in the Dominican Republic — two women and four men spots. However, the Association needed leadership to manage preparations.

The minutes state:

“Jane Usher and Amado Cruz were asked to lead the Belize Canoe Association in this venture. We are waiting for a favorable response from them.”

The Belize Olympic Association has committed to covering most expenses.

Race Calendar Deferred

The final agenda item — the remainder of the 2026 race calendar — was not discussed due to time constraints.

Context: A Meeting Held in the Middle of a National Sporting Crisis

The February 28 meeting took place against the backdrop of a rapidly escalating dispute over the 2026 Ruta Maya finish line. In the days since, the controversy intensified:

  • Paddlers such as Carlos “Lep” Linares and Alfred Lopez have publicly called for unity and symbolic action.
  • The BCA issued a forceful statement on March 4 declaring that “the survival of the La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge” had become a national issue.
  • The organizers have announced a record prize pool, including two house lots, while maintaining their decision to finish at the Grand Resort.
  • Public frustration has grown over entrance fees, vendor costs, and the perceived sidelining of paddlers.
  • Legal threats have been hinted at on air.

The BCA’s February 28 decisions now form the backbone of the paddlers’ collective response — a response that will shape not only this year’s race, but the future relationship between the Association and the Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge organizers.
