Belize cannot afford so many long holidays

17

By Horace Palacio: Belize has a serious problem that nobody wants to talk about.

We are trying to develop like a first world country, but we are operating like we already made it.

Long holidays like Good Friday and Easter Monday may feel good in the moment. Long weekends. Rest. Family time.

But here is the reality.

Every day the country shuts down, the economy takes a hit.

Businesses close. Offices shut. Construction stops. Government services pause. Productivity drops to near zero.

And in a country like Belize, that matters a lot more than people think.

Because Belize is not a high output economy. We are not producing at scale. We are not exporting massive volumes. We are not operating at peak efficiency.

So when we take extended breaks, we are not pausing a strong engine.

We are stalling a weak one.

Look at it practically.

A small business that closes for four days loses four days of revenue. That is income gone. A taxi driver makes less. A shop sells less. A contractor delays work. A farmer loses market time.

Multiply that across the entire country.

That is millions of dollars in lost economic activity.

Meanwhile, expenses do not stop.

Rent still due.
Salaries still expected.
Bills still coming.

So businesses lose income but still carry costs. That pressure gets passed on through higher prices, fewer jobs, and slower growth.

And while Belize pauses, the world keeps moving.

Countries that are serious about growth maximize productivity. They limit downtime. They understand that every working day counts, especially in developing economies.

Belize does the opposite.

We have long holidays, frequent shutdowns, and a culture that often celebrates rest more than production.

That might work in a fully developed economy with high efficiency and strong output.

It does not work in a country still trying to grow.

And here is the uncomfortable truth.

Belize is behind.

Behind in productivity.
Behind in industrial output.
Behind in economic expansion.

So we cannot afford to operate like countries that already built their wealth.

We need to be working more, building more, producing more.

Not less.

This is not about removing holidays completely. Rest is important. Culture is important.

But balance matters.

Right now, the balance is off.

Too much downtime for an economy that is not strong enough to absorb it.

Too much comfort for a country that still needs to build.

If Belize wants to grow, compete, and improve the standard of living, it must start taking productivity seriously.

Because development is not just about policies.

It is about work.

And countries that outwork others, outperform them.
