By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Prime Minister John Briceño used his address at the United Nations to champion causes of self-determination, inclusion, and justice for nations and peoples often sidelined in global diplomacy.
Briceño urged the UN to recognize Taiwan as an indispensable partner in sustainable development, noting its leadership in technology, semiconductors, AI, biotechnology, and renewable energy. “Taiwan already contributes to the SDGs,” he said, arguing that its exclusion undermines the UN’s mission of inclusivity and global cooperation.
He also called for an end to the decades-long U.S. embargo on Cuba, describing it as “illegal, inhumane, and contrary to the UN Charter.” He pressed for Cuba’s immediate removal from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism.
Turning to the Middle East, Briceño condemned what he called the “genocide in Palestine,” questioning what hope a child in Gaza has when their home is destroyed and their family murdered. He drew parallels with apartheid in South Africa, recalling how the UN once suspended the apartheid regime from the Assembly. “We must draw that lesson again,” he said, insisting that no regime desecrating the UN Charter and destroying a people has a place in the international community.
PM Briceno also called for urgent global action to restore order in Haiti, expunge gangs, and deliver justice, noting that a coherent international response remains lacking.
PM Briceño’s remarks underlined Belize’s long-standing commitment to justice, equity, and international law. He insisted that multilateralism is not optional but an obligation, and that defending human dignity is not negotiable.
“Equity and justice are our guiding principles,” he said, pledging that Belize will continue to stand for law over force and for cooperation over division.
