The Belize Bureau of Standards (BBS), in collaboration with the British Standards Institute (BSI) hosted a National Quality Policy (NQP) Workshop which had representation from both the Public and Private Sectors. The National Quality Policy is a strategic intervention intended to positively influence the quality of public service provided by the state for the citizenry and to encourage the private sector to produce goods and services that are globally competitive. The NQP provides strategic guidance for developing the National Quality Infrastructure (NQI). The National Quality Infrastructure comprises public and private sector organizations with the policies, relevant legal and regulatory framework, and practices needed to support and enhance the quality, safety, and environmental soundness of goods, services, and processes.
In 2021, the Belize National Quality Policy was developed through technical assistance from the British Standards Institution (BSI) in collaboration with the Caribbean Organisation for Standards and Quality (CROSQ) and funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), which was a deliverable of Phase 1 of the Standards Partnership Programme and was later approved by Cabinet in 2022. Phase 2 of the programme is ongoing and is designed to provide direct support to public and private sector stakeholders in the implementation of the NQP at the National Level. It will provide a platform to address the needs and priorities of both the public and private sectors, with targeted support for MSMEs and other stakeholders.
Yesterday’s workshop was the peak of a week’s worth of meetings with stakeholders to raise awareness around the NQP and was one of the first actions towards the successful implementation of the policy. In the coming months, the BBS and BSI’s local consultant will hold focus sessions with public and private stakeholders to identify what exists, pinpoint gaps, and assess the specific needs of identified priority sectors. This assessment will populate a matrix that will help guide the Government’s approach to Quality Infrastructure development and ultimately build a stronger culture for quality in Belize.
