By Horace Palacio: Belizeans can expect a mix of sunshine and showers today as moist and relatively unstable conditions persist across the country. The National Meteorological Service (NMS) forecasts sunny spells with cloudy periods for most of the day, with isolated showers and thunderstorms developing inland this afternoon. These showers are expected to shift towards the coast and offshore areas tonight.
Temperatures will remain warm, reaching a high of 90°F (32°C) inland and 86°F (30°C) along the coast. Residents in the hills can expect slightly cooler temperatures, with a high of 78°F (26°C).
While Hurricane Kirk churns in the Atlantic, posing no immediate threat to Belize, the NMS is closely monitoring two other systems with the potential for tropical development. One system, located south-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, has a high chance of becoming a tropical depression within the next 48 hours.
A second area of disturbed weather over the southwestern Caribbean Sea also has the potential to develop into a tropical depression over the weekend. The NMS urges residents to stay informed and be prepared for the possibility of increased rainfall and potential flooding later this week.
Seas will be light chop with waves of 2-4 feet, and winds will be east-southeast at 5-15 knots.
Looking ahead, Thursday will see cloudy conditions with a few showers and isolated thunderstorms, mainly over inland and northern areas. These showers are expected to become more widespread on Thursday night.
