By Horace Palacio: The Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic has warned about the New World Screwworm outbreak in southern Belize, urging farmers and pet owners to check their animals daily for signs of infection.
The warning comes after the Ministry of Agriculture confirmed 20 cases of the parasite, first detected in December 2024 in Toledo District. Despite efforts to contain the outbreak, 19 more cases have surfaced this year, including the first confirmed dog infection in January.
The New World Screwworm is a dangerous parasite that infests open wounds, with larvae developing within just seven days. Experts are warning that early detection is crucial, as the parasite can quickly become fatal to livestock, pets, and even humans if left untreated.
Minister Jose Abelardo Mai stated that a response team was immediately deployed to monitor affected villages, but cases continue to rise despite containment efforts. The Belize Wildlife Clinic is urging the public to report any suspicious wounds with maggots to BAHA immediately.
Authorities are now considering nationwide awareness campaigns to combat the spread.
