By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Group Phase MVP Josiah Moseley played a hell of a game against the Dominican Republic but with captain Douglas Langford in foul trouble early on, Belize fell to the Dominican Republic 79-69 in the FIBA U18 AmeriCup Quarterfinals on Friday at the Estadio Obras Sanitarias in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Belize were not only aiming to reach the AmeriCup semifinals; they were also playing for a ticket to the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2025 in Switzerland.

Now they’ll have to play the 5th to 8th ranking games on Saturday and Sunday while the Dominicans go on to the semifinals on Saturday and the World Cup next year.

Moseley finished the game with 25 points, 13 rebounds, and two assists. Ian Parham contributed 17 points and tallied three rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Wilford Dawson netted 14 and pulled six boards. Langford was limited to three points and 11 rebounds.

Lucas Morillo led the Dominican Republic with 20 points, 16 rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Danny Carbuccia totalled 17 points while Wilmer de la Rosa scored 11 points and grabbed ten boards.

Belize made 18 fast break points to the Dominican Republic’s 14.

Belize now awaits their opponents for Saturday’s Classification 5-8 game.

Today’s game was Belize’s second encounter with the Dominican Republic. Last July, the Dominican Republic won 95-78 in the semifinals of the FIBA Under 17 Centrobasket Championship held in Belize.

Earlier, the United States beat Puerto Rico 98-66.

Group B’s third seeded Brazil (1-2) are playing Group A’s second place Canada (2-1) at 2:40 pm. Group B second seeded Argentina (1-2) will close the Quarterfinals against Group A’s third place Venezuela (1-2) at 5:10 pm.
