By Zoila Palma:  Today, the Belize Bankers Association (BBA) expressed deep condolences to families of delivery personnel recently lost to “senseless acts of violence” and emphasized that carrying large sums of cash has become “a life-threatening liability.”

The association highlighted that while it cannot solve the root causes of crime, it can address cash as a catalyst, noting, “The presence of large sums of physical cash on delivery trucks makes our essential workers targets.”

The BBA firmly stated, “no Belizean life is worth a day’s receipts.”

The BBA is urging all businesses to move towards digital payments, pointing to significant investments made by the Central Bank of Belize and domestic banks in a “robust digital financial infrastructure.”

The association stressed that “the tools to protect our workers are at our fingertips,” including real-time transfers, digital wallets, contactless payments, and e-commerce solutions.

They further announced ongoing efforts to introduce instant payments, QR code scanning, and Request to Pay features within the next two years.

The BBA called on distribution companies to immediately review their cash-handling policies and encouraged retailers and merchants to support cashless transactions to enhance worker safety.

The association also invited businesses to engage with their banks, stating, “Our member banks stand ready to prioritize any business seeking to transition away from cash.”
