By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Recently, the Belize Audubon Society (BAS) recognized their rangers for their exemplary dedication and bravery.
BAS rangers selflessly extinguished fires at Guanacaste National Park and assisted the Itzanma Society at the Don Elijio Panti National Park near San Antonio, Cayo.
BAS noted that the rangers tireless efforts highlight their character and dedication to conservation.
BAS thanked rangers Artex Sho, Steven Coc, Alfonso Baptist, Glenford Coh, Edgar Batz, and Ornel Salam who fought the inferno at Guanacaste National Park. For two days Edgar Batz, Artex Sho, Ornel Salam, Michael Sabal and Kelvin Cal were on the hills of the Elijio Panti National Park.
A few days later Artex, Steven, Ornell and Glenford were battling fires about 200 meters from the borders of St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park.
The BAS also expressed gratitude to Boat Captain Reinaldo Caal of the Half Moon Caye and Blue Hole Natural Monuments.
“Captain Caal heroically assisted a fisherman delivered to Half Moon Caye in a semi-conscious state suffering from dehydration. Caal provided critical care, giving the fisherman oxygen throughout the night until he was safely evacuated to the Coastguard Base at Turneffe Atoll the following morning.
Additionally, our President, Kevin Geban honored Executive Director Amanda Acosta for her years of dedicated service to conservation. Amanda’s tireless efforts have been instrumental in advancing our mission,” BAS said.
Shane Young, Protected Areas Director who handed over the medals, rightly commented, “Going above and beyond the call of duty is an invaluable virtue that our employees embody as we create a balance between people and the environment, not only in the protected areas we co-manage but also amongst fellow conservation partners.”
“We are immensely proud of our team’s selflessness and courage,” the BAS expressed.
