Press Release

The Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy and Logistics (MPUEL) is pleased to announce Belize’s successful participation and assumption of a key leadership role at the LV Meeting of Energy Ministers, held in Santiago, Chile, during the 10th Energy Week organized by the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE).

Ministers and energy organizations from across Latin America and the Caribbean gathered to reaffirm their collective commitment to advancing a fair, inclusive, and sustainable energy transition for the region. Discussions focused on accelerating renewable energy integration, strengthening cross-border cooperation, and mobilizing investment in clean technologies to ensure long-term resilience and economic growth.

A highlight of the meeting was Belize’s official assumption of the Presidency Pro Tempore of OLADE, a role that underscores the nation’s commitment to regional collaboration and leadership. In accepting this significant responsibility, Belize pledged to work closely with fellow member states to strengthen unity, advance practical initiatives, and ensure that the benefits of the energy transition are shared equitably among all citizens.

Representing Belize, Hon. Michel Chebat, Minister of Public Utilities, Energy and Logistics, was accompanied by Mr. Ryan Cobb, Energy Director in the Ministry, who also participated in the technical sessions.

In his address, Minister Chebat emphasized the nation’s efforts to diversify its energy mix, deepen regional interconnection, and create a robust policy environment that attracts investment in innovation and clean energy infrastructure. He stated, “Belize accepts this responsibility with humility and a firm commitment to strengthening the bonds that unite us, advancing practical initiatives, and ensuring that the benefits of our energy transition are equitable for all our citizens.”

He further reaffirmed that for small and climate-vulnerable nations, the energy transition is not only an environmental imperative but also a crucial matter of energy security, economic stability, and national resilience.

Belize’s participation in the LV Meeting of Energy Ministers and assumption of the Presidency Pro Tempore highlight the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to building stronger regional partnerships and ensuring that Belize remains actively engaged in shaping the future of energy across Latin America and the Caribbean.
