By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Government of Belize has officially declared new municipal boundaries for the seven towns across the country, a significant move aimed at aligning urban development with legal administration. The changes, which affect Punta Gorda, Dangriga, Benque Viejo, San Ignacio/Santa Elena, Orange Walk, Corozal, and San Pedro, went into effect on April 1, 2025, as per an Order published in the Gazette by the Minister of Local Government, Florencio Marin, Jr.
The revised boundaries result from the Municipal Boundaries Re-Delineation Exercise, which was originally initiated in 2012 but resumed in 2021 following a Cabinet decision, the Ministry of Rural Transformation (MRT) said in a statement on Monday, May 5, 2025. The exercise was completed in the last quarter of the last fiscal year, incorporating extensive consultations with town councils, buffering village councils, area representatives, and the wider public. The MRT said the updated delineations ensure municipal service delivery aligns with each town’s expansion, while respecting the historically recognized boundaries of neighbouring villages.
“The new delineation of these towns now aligns with their respective development and growth while providing the legal basis for management and administration and the delivery of municipal services whilst not compromising what is known and recognized as the existing boundaries of the buffering villages,” the Ministry of Rural Transformation said in its statement.
The existing town boundaries were first established in the 1980s and 1990s, and officials say the adjustments reflect the current urban landscape, allowing for better governance in growing municipalities.
Residents and interested parties who want to review the newly established municipal boundaries can access copies of the declarations published in the Gazette or obtain electronic versions of the maps through respective town councils or the Department of Local Government.
The Ministry of Rural Transformation expressed appreciation for the technical support provided by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Mining and the Attorney General’s office in successfully completing the exercise.
