Belize and U.S. launch Biometric Data sharing partnership to strengthen border security

By Zoila Palma:  Belize and the United States marked a major step in their bilateral cooperation with the launch of the Biometric Data Sharing Partnership (BDSP) and the handover of key equipment to support its implementation.

The program aims to strengthen border security, improve migration management, and enhance public safety through the use of biometric technology at airports and border entry points, supporting Belize’s efforts to modernize its border and migration systems.

At the launch event, U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Katharine Beamer highlighted the broader significance of the partnership, saying it builds on decades of cooperation and addresses shared challenges such as transnational crime, narcotics trafficking, and irregular migration.

Through the BDSP, Belizean immigration authorities will be able to securely collect and share biometric data, including fingerprints and facial images, to verify identities, detect fraud, and identify potential security risks, all while promoting safe, legal, and orderly migration.

Belizean officials emphasized that the program will improve interagency coordination and operational capacity at borders and points of service.

The United States reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Belize through capacity building.

Beyond the national level, the BDSP is expected to contribute to regional security in Central America and the Caribbean, advancing shared goals of safer borders, lawful movement, and increased public trust in government institutions.
