By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Netherlands has made history and sent a powerful message to the world by electing Rob Jetten, 38, as its new Prime Minister, making him both the youngest and the first openly gay leader in the country’s history.

Jetten, leader of the Democrats 66 (D66) party, won the October 29 election, defeating far-right candidate Geert Wilders, who ran on an anti-immigration platform and is known for his inflammatory remarks about Islam.

“I am incredibly happy that we have become the biggest party in this election,” Jetten told reporters. “This is a historic result for D66, but also a great responsibility. We’ve shown the rest of Europe and the world that it’s possible to defeat populism with a positive message.”

On election night, Jetten was joined by his fiancé, Nico Keenan, a two-time Olympian from Argentina. The couple celebrated the night with a heartwarming video on TikTok that has since gone viral. Jetten and Keenan, who got engaged in November 2024, plan to marry next year.

Jetten’s victory is being celebrated globally as a milestone for LGBTQ+ representation in politics, symbolizing progress, inclusion, and equality.

In Belize, where the LGBTQ+ community continues to advocate for visibility and equal rights, Jetten’s achievement has been welcomed as a positive step for global inclusion. Though Belize made progress with the 2016 Supreme Court ruling decriminalizing same-sex relations, local advocates continue to call for stronger anti-discrimination protections and greater representation in leadership roles.

Jetten’s rise to leadership reflects a growing global movement toward diversity and inclusion, inspiring hope that one day Belize, too, will see greater representation for LGBTQ+ Belizeans in public life and leadership.

His message of positivity, empathy, and unity offers a valuable example, showing that when societies embrace all people equally, everyone moves forward together.
