Belize and Taiwan chart deeper economic ties in Taipei talks

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize’s economic diplomacy reached Taipei this week, where Minister of State at the Ministry of Economic Transformation Osmond Martinez and the ministry’s Chief Executive Officer Carlos Pol were hosted at a high-level luncheon by Taiwan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi, with an agenda pointing toward expanded cooperation across a sweeping range of sectors.

According to Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the July 29 gathering in Taipei City saw Chen praise Martinez for actively implementing Prime Minister John Briceño’s policies, including the debt-for-nature Blue Bonds, which aim to enhance Belize’s fiscal structure and strengthen its economic resilience.

The Deputy Minister emphasized that the 37-year diplomatic relationship between Taiwan and Belize rests on shared values of freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights, and expressed appreciation for Belize’s long-standing support of Taiwan’s participation in international organizations.

The forward agenda is broad. Taiwan is committed to working with Belize to expand cooperative projects spanning carbon credits, electric buses, medical care, public health, smart agriculture, sustainable tourism, and talent cultivation, Chen said, adding that Taiwan will continue helping to boost Belize’s national competitiveness and sustainable development to enhance the well-being of people on both sides.

Martinez, in response, thanked Taiwan for its long-term, across-the-board national development assistance and reaffirmed that Taiwan is Belize’s most important and trusted partner. He anticipated continuing to deepen bilateral economic, investment, and trade ties while expanding diverse exchanges to create opportunities for mutual benefit and shared prosperity.

The table itself signalled the seriousness of the money conversation. High-level officials from Taiwan’s Ministries of Agriculture, Environment, and Finance attended, alongside the Export-Import Bank of the Republic of China, the International Cooperation and Development Fund, and the Latin American and Caribbean Trade Office. Participants exchanged views on multilateral cooperation within the Central American Bank for Economic Integration, financial mutual assistance mechanisms, and the exploration of trade and business opportunities.

The Taipei talks cap an active stretch for the partnership on Belizean soil as well, with the Taiwan Technical Mission featuring in the launch of the Belize MOVES health initiative just days ago, evidence of a relationship working simultaneously at the summit and on the ground.

For Belize, the takeaways are concrete: a partner publicly committed to widening cooperation in the sectors that will shape the country’s next decade, and a financial conversation, from CABEI to trade finance, that keeps Belize’s development agenda well connected in Taipei.
