By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize and Mexico are taking concrete steps to strengthen their economic partnership, following a high-level meeting held at the northern border last week.
On June 19, delegations representing the Government of Belize, the Mexican Federal Government, and the State of Quintana Roo met at the Princess Las Vegas Conference Room at the Santa Elena border to advance regional cooperation between the two countries. The talks centered on a series of initiatives covering investment promotion, trade, and economic development, anchored by a planned Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Belize and the State of Quintana Roo.
Several pillars of the relationship were on the table. Among the most notable were efforts to attract what officials described as synchronized factories in both Belize and Quintana Roo, and plans to integrate the region’s transportation system for the movement of cargo and passengers between the two sides, especially through Mexico’s Tren Maya.
A major focus of the discussions was using the partnership to access the wider CARICOM market. Officials looked at the demand in the larger CARICOM countries and explored how Belize and Quintana Roo could work together on an investment promotion strategy to supply that market. Talks also touched on Mexico’s centers of economic development, including the industrial park in Chetumal, as well as opportunities in agrobusiness, agro processing, manufacturing, and energy.
Officials say the collaboration will open the door to stronger ties between the private sectors of both Belize and Quintana Roo, making it easier to share information and creating new business opportunities in a relatively short time.
The Belize delegation included senior officials from the Office of the Prime Minister, the Corozal Free Zone, the Ministry of Investment, the Economic Development Council, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, and BELTRAIDE. The Mexican delegation featured representatives of the country’s federal government and senior economic officials from the State of Quintana Roo.
