By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, Jose Abelardo Mai, met with Mexico’s newly appointed Secretary of Agriculture, Dr. Julio Berdegué Sacristán, on Monday, December 8th, 2024, in Palenque, Chiapas, Mexico, to discuss agricultural and trade issues of mutual interest. One of the key topics was the export of green coconuts from Belize to Mexico.
During the meeting, Mexico agreed to respond to Belize’s request to export green coconuts with husks and to expedite the risk assessment process required for this trade. Belize indicated that in the next few years, it will have as many as 5 million green coconuts per year to export, primarily to Quintana Roo, Mexico.
Minister Mai also discussed the cattle trade and Belize’s intention of increasing exports to Mexico. Dr. Berdegué said Mexico is interested in reducing the cost and technical barriers to the formal trade of cattle in an attempt to increase the import of cattle from Belize.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MSFSE) said Minister Mai’s discussions with Dr. Berdegué mark a significant step towards enhancing agricultural trade between Belize and Mexico, promising mutual benefits for both countries.
