By Zoila Palma: The Government of Belize and the Embassy of Japan have formalized an agreement for the donation of seven fire trucks to the Belize National Fire Service.
The symbolic signing ceremony was held on September 30, 2026, at the Belmopan Fire Station, marking the completion of the application and approval process for the donation.
The seven fire trucks have a combined value of approximately BZD $1.3 million and are expected to arrive in Belize by the end of the year.
The vehicles will strengthen fire response capacity across the country, with trucks designated for Corozal, Orange Walk, Belize District, Cayo and Stann Creek. In the Belize District, fire trucks will support Belize City, Ladyville and Caye Caulker, while the Cayo allocation will serve Belmopan and the Stann Creek allocation will serve Dangriga.
The donation will also include training for fire personnel, scheduled for January 2027, to enhance technical skills and ensure the effective use of the new equipment.
Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of the Public Service, Disaster Risk Management and Enterprise, Rolando Zetina, welcomed the initiative and highlighted the longstanding relationship between Belize and Japan, noting that the two countries have shared more than four decades of diplomatic relations and cooperation.
Japan’s Ambassador to Belize, Ryōsuke Yamakura, said the fire trucks represent an investment in life-saving resources, faster emergency response and greater peace of mind for families and businesses. He described the initiative as support from the Japanese people to the Belizean people.
The Government of Belize expressed appreciation to the Government and people of Japan, the Japanese Firefighters Association and the Embassy of Japan.
