By Zoila Palma: Belize and Guyana have signed 4 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation across key sectors, including defence and security, education and skills development, tourism, and economic engagement.
The agreements establish broad frameworks for collaboration guided by principles of mutual respect, equality, reciprocity and non-interference, and are aligned with national laws and CARICOM obligations.
Under the defence and security MoU, both governments agreed to enhance cooperation through capacity-building, information sharing, training and dialogue to address shared challenges such as transnational organised crime, drug trafficking, terrorism and other emerging threats.
In education, the two countries committed to expanding scholarship opportunities, academic exchanges and skills development, including access to digital learning platforms.
The tourism agreement focuses on joint initiatives, knowledge-sharing and sustainable tourism development, with an emphasis on multi-destination travel, capacity-building and diaspora engagement to boost economic growth and cultural exchange.
An additional framework on digital transformation and artificial intelligence aims to improve government efficiency and implementation capacity.
