By Zoila Palma: Today a Belize delegation including cane farmers, technicians and senior staff the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, and other Government officials, visited Quintana Roo, Mexico to participate in a presentation and field visit in connection with the Management and Control of Fusarium in Sugarcane.
The presentation and field visit, organized by the Production and Sugarcane Quality Committee of Ingenio San Rafael de Pucte, a sugar cane factory in Pucte, Quintana Roo, and coordinated by the government of the State of Quintana Roo, aims to help cane farmers in Quintana Roo and Belize deal with the fungus Fusarium, which has devastated cane fields in neighbouring Mexico and now has spread to Belize.
The sugar cane crops in both countries for this season and the following will be adversely affected by the disease.
The delegation participated in a presentation led by several Mexican experts and then went on visits to sugarcane fields in surrounding areas of the Mexican side of the Rio Hondo, where Pucte and the San Rafael sugar factory are located.
Minister of Agriculture Jose Abelardo Mai led the Belizean delegation and was accompanied by CEO Servulo Baeza and several Senior members of staff of the Ministry of Agriculture.
