By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) has firmly rebutted allegations of involvement in the irregular exportation of sugar purportedly discovered at a border location in northern Belize.
In an official statement released today, BAHA categorically refuted any association with the issuance of export licenses for sugar.
Contrary to rumors circulating, BAHA clarified that it does not possess the authority to issue export licenses for agricultural commodities.
Instead, BAHA primarily focuses on regulating imports to ensure compliance with sanitary and phytosanitary standards, guarding against plant pests, animal diseases, and ensuring the safety of imported food products. Importers are legally mandated to obtain BAHA import permits, outlining specific conditions for importation.
BAHA emphasized its support for the exportation of agricultural goods through a stringent inspection and certification process, particularly for raw sugar destined for various markets including the Caribbean and Europe.
BAHA noted that only two entities, BSI-ASR and Santander Sugar, are authorized to undergo inspection and certification procedures for sugar exports.
Following meticulous scrutiny by BAHA officers and compliance verification, these companies receive a phytosanitary certificate validating the export’s adherence to standards. The designated exit points for certified sugar shipments are the Port of Belize LTD and the Port of Big Creek.
Addressing allegations of unauthorized sugar exports, BAHA adamantly denied any involvement in facilitating irregular trade practices with Mexico or any other nation.
Notably, BAHA does not issue export licenses, a function beyond its scope.
Furthermore, BAHA clarified that it does not impose quantitative restrictions on any commodity, deferring to regulations set forth by other relevant regulatory bodies.
Emphasizing its commitment to safeguarding Belize’s agriculture sector and upholding lawful trade practices, BAHA called upon the public to support its efforts.
