By Zoila Palma: The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), in collaboration with the Belize Zoo, the Forest Department and a local farmer, worked together to treat a wild tapir found suffering from New World screwworm infestation.
The animal was spotted roaming on a farm in the Blue Creek area, where farmer Dueck noticed its condition and immediately alerted BAHA.
Authorities then coordinated with the Belize Zoo and the Forest Department to respond to the situation and provide medical assistance.
Zoo veterinarians sedated the tapir and removed the screwworms; however, the animal escaped shortly afterward.
The following day, the tapir was located again and successfully sedated. Dr. Isabelle and zoo staff treated the wounds, with support from the Forest Department, ensuring the animal received proper care.
The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), IICA and partners continue to host training and awareness sessions on new world screwworm and its effects.
This transboundary parasitic disease poses a significant risk to the health of animals, people and ecosystems, with direct impacts on food security, the rural economy and the well-being of communities.
