Press Release
The Belize Agricultural Health Authority and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise inform farmers and the public that there is an increase in cases of paralytic rabies in horses and cattle. It is important to note that paralytic rabies is zoonotic, meaning it can be transmitted to humans.
Rabies can be found in both domestic and wild animals, which act as reservoirs and vectors for the disease. All sick animals should be handled with caution, as the rabies virus can be transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal.
Signs of rabies include changes in behavior, such as nervousness and aggressiveness, excessive drooling and foaming at the mouth, difficulty eating, drinking, or swallowing, loss of appetite, circling, and eventually death.
The following steps can be taken to prevent this deadly disease:
1.Ensure that your dogs, cats, and livestock are vaccinated by a licensed veterinarian, and keep records of their vaccinations.
2.Keep your animals restricted to your property.
3.Avoid leaving uncovered food or garbage that may attract wild animals.
