By Zoila Palma: The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), IICA and partners are hosting a training session on the new world screwworm and effects.
For more than 20 years after being eradicated, Central America and Mexico are once again facing a serious health threat with the resurgence of the new world screwworm (NWS), Cochliomyia hominivorax.
This transboundary parasitic disease poses a significant risk to the health of animals, people and ecosystems, with direct impacts on food security, the rural economy and the well-being of communities.
Faced with this situation, national health authorities, with the support of the United States Government through the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the Department of Agriculture (APHIS/USDA), and in close collaboration with international and specialized organizations, have developed a series of measures to prevent the spread of this disease.
However, the success of these measures depends to a large extent on the informed and active participation of local actors.
As part of the IICA-APHIS/USDA Work Plan, they are conducting a series of awareness sessions in the Toledo District from October 27-29, 2025, with the purpose of sensitizing the public and promoting good practices for the prevention and control of the New World Screwworm.
“Active participation in this training process is essential to effectively confront the threat of NWS. Training is not just a complement: it is a strategic tool that strengthens surveillance, improves technical response and promotes preventive practices from the field,” the Ministry noted.
Training, sharing knowledge and acting in a coordinated manner protects health, reduces health risks and contributes to the well-being of our communities and the environment that sustains them.
